Accelerating Action at OnceWas | International Women’s Day 2025
As we approach International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8, 2025, OnceWas is proud to join the global celebration honouring the achievements and contributions of women worldwide. This year’s IWD theme, "Accelerate Action," emphasises the urgency of advancing gender equality and supporting initiatives that empower women and girls.
We believe that progress is driven by action. Our team, predominantly made up of talented and passionate women, plays a vital role in shaping our brand and its vision. From design to production, marketing to customer service, each woman in our team contributes to creating luxurious, versatile pieces that empower the modern woman.
This year, in alignment with "Accelerate Action," we are celebrating the incredible women behind OnceWas by sharing their personal insights and experiences. We asked each team member:
Belinda Abbott: Director & Head Designer of OnceWas
What does "Accelerate Action" mean to you in your personal or professional life?
Accelerate Action" means driving purposeful change with urgency and intention. At OnceWas, it’s about pushing forward initiatives that empower women—whether through our designs, the voices we amplify, or the opportunities we create. Fashion is more than what we wear; it’s a powerful tool for self-expression, confidence, and inclusion.
On a personal level, accelerating action means using my platform to champion equity, ensuring progress isn’t just an idea but a reality we actively shape. In business, it’s about making decisions that align with our values, from ethical production to fostering a workplace where women feel supported, heard, and valued.
True impact comes from momentum, and this International Women’s Day, I’m committed to keeping that momentum strong. Through our partnership with i=Change, we proudly contribute to charities such as Protect a Woman, Empower Women in the Pacific, and Dress for Success, helping to create real, lasting change for women in need.

Linda Cerny: Head of Wholesale
Believe in yourself—trust your instincts and abilities. Imposter syndrome is common, but your contributions are valuable. Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, colleagues, and mentors who encourage your growth and provide guidance through challenges. I’m so fortunate to work with incredible women who inspire me every day.
As women, we wear many hats, and taking the next step can sometimes feel daunting. But remember, women are strong and powerful, and we should support one another in going after what we want in life. You’ll never regret taking the leap, because even if things don’t go as planned, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you tried. Regret often comes from not trying, not from failing. And when you do take that leap, remember to celebrate every win—big or small.

Shwetha: Design & Production Manager
Inclusive fashion embraces people of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and abilities, breaking down barriers that have traditionally limited access to stylish clothing. It ensures that everyone, regardless of their unique identity, can express themselves confidently through fashion that makes them feel seen and valued. By celebrating diversity, inclusive fashion proves that style truly knows no boundaries—it’s for everyone.

Marwah: Design & Product Assistant
Prioritising functionality and accessibility in designs—considering diverse body types, ages, and experiences—plays a pivotal role in my work on the OnceWas design team. I strive to create a collaborative environment where women feel comfortable sharing their insights and taking creative risks. I also advocate for policies such as flexible work schedules, parental leave, and mental health resources that benefit women in the workplace.

Jess: Operations Manager
At OnceWas, supporting women is at the core of our brand, and partnering with charities allows us to make a tangible impact in communities that need it most. Through these collaborations, we empower our customers to join us in supporting causes that uplift women. By working with charity partners, we create lasting change while staying true to our mission of fostering inclusivity and empowerment.

Donna: Pattern Maker & Garment Technician
One of the biggest challenges I encountered was transitioning from traditional patternmaking—using scissors and cardboard—to digital software. Learning new technology meant completely rethinking my approach to the design process. It taught me the importance of staying open-minded and adaptable, especially in an industry that’s constantly evolving. Embracing change and continuously learning has been key to my growth.

Elisa: Ecommerce & Customer Service Manager

Empowering Women Through Inclusive & Functional Fashion
Empowerment in fashion goes beyond aesthetics—it’s about representation and accessibility. We are committed to ensuring every woman feels seen and confident in our designs. Over the past year, we’ve expanded our size range to be more inclusive, and soon, we’ll be launching a dedicated petite range to provide even more women with perfectly tailored pieces.

While this initiative isn’t directly tied to gender equality, it reflects our broader commitment to embracing and celebrating diversity in fashion. We believe that clothing should be designed for women in all shapes and sizes, and we are excited to take action towards a more inclusive future.
Our Commitment to Empowering Women Through Charity
Beyond our designs, our commitment to supporting women extends to our charitable initiatives. This year we are reaffirming our dedication to the three incredible charities we currently support through i=Change, Protect A Women, Dressing For Success & and Empower Women In The Pacific, ensuring that our contributions continue to create lasting impact. To mark IWD 2025, we will be tripling our $1 donation per purchase to $3 on all orders placed from March 8th - March 12, providing even more support to these organisations that uplift and empower women in meaningful ways.
